I tried everything, rebooted Mac Mini and iPhone several times, to no avail. After several minutes however it told me it couldn’t connect. I ticked it and it showed my Mac Mini and a spinning wheel. And indeed, the Music app now displayed an option “home sharing”. But hey, you can now use the Music app for that. Alas, the Remote app still ‘saw’ my music, but it didn’t do anything when I clicked on a track or an album. I turned on Media Sharing in System Preferences and tried to stream my music. Works like a charm in Mojave.Īfter making a backup (!) This is a great change to the Home Sharing feature, and it will make it a lot easier to set up a master library to use on multiple devices. Note that since this is a per-user setting, and multiple users could have libraries on a Mac, sharing only works when a user is logged in. (On a laptop, this only works if it’s connected to power.) And if you have Wake for Network Access checked in the Energy Saver preferences, your library is accessible even if the host Mac is asleep.

As long as the computer hosting the media is running, you can load its content on another computer, an Apple TV, or on iOS (in the Music or TV apps). But this centralized media sharing has a great advantage: you don’t need to launch any of the apps to be able to share their content. With iTunes split into four apps, you wouldn’t want to have to turn it on for each app. Perusing macOS Catalina I was initially worried that Home Sharing had been removed, because there was nothing about it in the Music app, but I found that they feature had been shunted to a new location: the Sharing pane of System Preferences.
